Comparing the combined sample of unipolars against controls......
Comparing the combined sample of unipolars against controls there is a reduction in the frequency of the deleted allele that approaches significance. Comparison of the allele frequencies in the two unipolar samples shows that the frequency in the outpatient sample is very close to the control frequency whereas the lithium clinic sample shows a significant decrease in frequency of the deleted allele compared with controls.

In depression, the pattern of results in terms of heterogeneity and association is similar to that of bipolar disorder, overall and in east Asians. In Caucasians, there was no association between C677T and depression. It seems that the MTHFR C677T polymorphism plays no role in the development of affective disorders.

The difference between control and unipolar depressive pati......
The difference between control and unipolar depressive patients was not significant at the genotype level or the allelic level. When the data were analyzed separately for each gender, only the female group showed improved statistical significance for genotype distribution. When patients from all the three diagnostic group were combined and analyzed against the controls, there was no significant difference in terms of genotype and allele frequencies for males. With the female group, there was improvement in the level of significance for difference in genotype distribution between controls and all patients. In the dominant model, there was marginally significant difference between controls and and all psychiatric cases combined.

The frequency of the rare 9 allele was greater in unipolars (0.04) than controls (0.02) although comparing the combined sample of unipolars against controls reveals no statistically significant difference in allele or genotype distributions. However, the frequency was greater in the out-patient, non-lithium unipolars (0.08) and the overrepresentation of genotypes bearing the 9 allele amongst these probands achieves statistical signifiance when compared against the controls and approaches significance when compared against the lithium clinic unipolar probands.

The genotype and allele distribution of the Ala-9Val MnSOD polymorphism was similar in the MDD patients and controls. Moreover, the distribution of genotypes and alleles in the Ala-9Val MnSOD polymorphism were similar in the combined patient group (MDD plus BD) and controls.

For the TH polymorphism, the '1,2' genotype was more frequently observed among controls than in the patient group. However, this P value does not remain significant after applying a Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. When considering only BPI or UPR patients who were positive for family history, no significant differences were observed, either.

The Val/Met158 genotype was the most represented in all three groups, with higher frequencies in MDD and BD patients than incontrols, while the Met/Met158 mutated genotype was morefrequent in healthy subjects than inpatients. However, thesedifferences did not reach statistically significant values.
