Disease Type | Bipolar Disorder |
Study Design | case-control |
Study Type | Candidate-gene association study |
Sample Size | The UK sample consisted of 515 BD patients and 1,316 control subjests;the Canadian sample consisted of 385 patients and 312 control subjects. |
SNP/Region/Marker Size | 10 SNPs |
Predominant Ethnicity | Caucasian |
Population | British and Canandian |
Gender | The UK sample:65% women in BD patients and 58% women in control subjects;the Canadian sample:63% women in BD patients and 54% women in control subjects |
Age Group | Adults : Mean age(SD)(year):The UK sample:48.0 (11.4) in BD patients and 41.7 (13.2) in control subjects;the Canadian sample:46.0 (12.5) in BD patients and 43.7 (13.1) in control subjects |
Sample Diagnosis | DSM |

Technique | genotyping |
Statistical Method | Genotype and allele frequencies were assessed for association with BD using chi-squared tests.Haplotype analysis was conducted using UNPHASED.Interaction analysis was performed using the Genetic Association Interaction Analysis (GAIA) application. |
Result Summary | No alleles or haplotypes were significantly preferentially transmitted from parents to affected offspring. However, the trend for preferential transmission of markers in the 3'UTR is in the same direction as in a previous report for association with mood and panic disorders and therefore warrants attempts at replication. Marker-to-marker linkage disequilibrium (LD) showed that strong LD was present over relatively short distances of up to 20 kb and was present for SNPs as well as for polymorphic repeats. The polymorphisms identified in this study will be useful in examining the role of this gene in other neuropsychiatric disorders and behavioural traits. |
