Sample Status	The study sample consisted of bipolar pedigrees ascertained at the Johns Hopkins University for a bipolar linkage analysis. It includes the 65 multiplex bipolar pedigrees described in McInnis et al., and 9 additional families wherein BD II was the sole bipolar diagnosis. These 9 families had been initially excluded from the initial genomewide analysis, because there was no BD I proband. In the present analysis of the BD II phenotype, the 9 exclusively BD II pedigrees were combined with the 65 pedigrees. In the combined dataset there were a total of 73 all possible BD II affected sibling-pairs, of which 42 were independent siblingpairs and 146 all possible relative-pairs. The diagnoses were established using the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC). The RDC differs slightly from the DSM-IV criteria for BD II in that the required duration of the hypomania in RDC is two days, while in DSM-IV a hypomania of four days duration is required. Only those subjects who had experienced hypomanias with recurrent major depressive episodes were counted as affected; hypomania with only a single episode of major depression was assessed as phenotype uncertain.

Statistical Method	Non-parametric multipoint linkage analysis was performed using GENEHUNTER.
Result Summary	RESULTS: The current analyses supported the previous finding on chromosome 18q21. In addition a peak with a non-parametric LOD (NPL) of 2.07 occurred between D9S915 and D9S2157, located on 9q34. Analysis of the nine BD II families alone identified peaks on 9p13 and 9q33, with NPL scores of 3.20 and 2.09, respectively. There was no evidence at 18q21 in these nine families. CONCLUSIONS: This suggests that there may be substantial differences in the etiology of BD in families that have BD II exclusively as the diagnosis.
