Detail Info
Sample Diagnosis |
DSM-IV |
Sample Status |
All cases were of Han Chinese origin and lived in Shanghai, China. Patients were interviewed by two independent psychiatrists and diagnosed strictly according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) based on Structured Clinical Interviewfor DSM-IV Axis 1 Disorders (SCID-1). |
Technique |
SNPs were genotyped using iPLEX chemistry on a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI–TOF-MS, named as MassARRAY system, manufactured by Sequenom, Inc.). |
Statistical Method |
P values of allelic and genotypic tests were calibrated using Bonferroni correction, and those for haplotype analysis were done by false discovery rate, and were considered statistically significant if they were below 0.05. |
Result Summary |
Our findings prove that NRGN is a shared susceptibility gene of schizophrenia, major depression and bipolar disorder in Han Chinese, and this might provide a new target for the diagnosis and treatment of these mental disorders. |

For bipolar disorder, rs7113041 and rs12278912 showed allelic or genotypic association before Bonferroni correction. After Bonferroni correction, only rs7113041 remained associated with bipolar disorder.

It is particularly noticeable that one haplotype, GA, was significantly associated with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder. The global P values for them were 0.004, 0.014, and 0.001 respectively, implicating a common risk region in NRGN for major psychiatric disorders.
