Sample Status	Subjects were recruited from the ClÂ’nico San Carlos Hospital (Madrid, Spain) and the Virgen de la Luz Hospital (Cuenca, Spain). Patients were evaluated using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-I: P). All met DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorders and were euthymic according to the Van Gorp criteria (van Gorp et al., 1998). The sample and other inclusion and exclusion criteria are described in detail elsewhere (Ancin et al., 2010b). Control subjects were screened using the SCID-I non-patient version to exclude subjects with a prior psychiatric history. Controls did not have any first-degree relatives with BD or other psychiatric disorder. Participants were coded as 'smokers' (smoked during the study period), as 'former smokers' (past smokers who had quit at least one month prior to the study) and as 'non-smokers' (never having smoked a cigarette). Former and non-smokers were combined into a single group. Subjects were asked to abstain from smoking during the 2 h prior to the study. Investigation was carried out according to the Declaration of Helsinki. Ethical approval was granted from the Ethics Committee at both Hospitals and all subjects provided written informed consent.
Technique	genotyping
Statistical Method	Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 15.0 for Windows (Chicago, IL, USA). The X² test was used for qualitative variables. ANOVA was used for comparisons between polymorphisms and number of cigarettes smoked daily. Association between individual SNP and CPT-DS measures was determined by linear (beta coefficient) or logistic regressions (OR and CI 95%), according to the normal fit of the variables. Haplotype associations were examined separately in the bipolar and control groups using general linear models (GLM) as implemented in Haplo.Stats 1.3.8. in the free software environment R (http://mayoresearch.mayo.edu/mayo/research/schaid_lab/ software.cfm) (Schaid et al., 2002; Sinnwell et al., 2005).
