| Sample Status |
The study group consisted of 106 patients with bipolar disorder (53 males and 52 females; the mean age: 41.13, SD = 12.234 years), and 106 healthy subjects (54 males and 52 females; the mean age: 38.20, SD = 11.525 years) as the control group. All participants were living in Tokat city of central Anatolia region of Turkey. All bipolar patients were followed up at the Outpatient Clinic of the Psychiatry Department of Gaziosmanpasa University, School of Medicine. They were all diagnosed as bipolar disorder according to the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV) criteria (American Psychiatric Association 1994). The control subjects were matched for age, gender and the geographic area with the bipolar patients. |
| Technique |
Genotyping |
| Statistical Method |
The statistical analysis was performed by using PEPI 3.0 (available at:http://www.usdinc.com/pepi.html). The distribution of DBH gene polymorphisms between the bipolar disorder patients and the healthy controls were compared by using the chi square test or Fisher's exact test. |
| Result Summary |
The results showed statistically significant associations for genotypic and allelic distribution between the 1603C>T polymorphism and bipolar disease (p=0,0012 and p=0,034, respectively). There was no association observed between the genotype and allelic frequencies for -1021C>T and 444G>A polymorphisms and bipolar disorder. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggests that the 1603C>T polymorphism of the DBH gene is associated with susceptibility to bipolar disorder in Turkish population. |
