Five studies containing 971 cases and 1,397 controls were selected to assess the risk of -50C/T (rs334558) on bipolar disorder; of which two were Caucasian and three were Asian. For schizophrenia, a total of 1,310 cases and 1,631 controls covering both Caucasians and Asians were included. |
| Statistic Method |
For controls of each study included, we re-examined HWE by χ2 test. Odds ratio (OR) and 95%interval confidence (95 % CI) from allelic data was used to measure the association strength of -50C/T (rs334558) with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Heterogeneity among studies was examined by Cochran's Q test and then quantified by I2 statistic. If the P<0.10 or I2>50%, the pooled ORs and 95% CIs were estimated by a random-effect model because of significant heterogeneity; otherwise, they were evaluated by a fixed model. Sensitivity analysis was used to assess the stability of results; that is to recalculate the pooled OR after removing each study at a time. Besides, Begg's funnel plot and Egger's test were used to examine the publication bias. All analyses were executed by Stata software and all p values were two-sided with a significant level at 0.05 expect for Cochran's Q test (P<0.10). |

Here, by using meta-analysis we reported that glycogen synthase kinase 3beta promoter inactive mutant rs334558 may contribute to the development of schizophrenia not bipolar disorder. This might be used to distinguish these two diseases. |
