| Sample Status |
BP-I and BP-II patients were recruited from outpatient and inpatient settings. The exclusion criteria were: any DSM-IV-TR Axis I diagnosis other than BP-I or BP-II(either first-onset or with previous episodes), being outside the 18-65-year-old age range, and any other major or minor mental illnesses, neurological disorders, or organic mental disorders.Although theDSM-IV-TRcriterion for hypomania is the minimum duration of 4 days, current epidemiologic data suggest that a 2-day duration is more prevalent in community samples [Akiskal et al.,1977, 1979; Angst, 1998; Benazzi, 2001; Angst et al., 2003; Judd et al.,2003a]; therefore, we used the 2-day minimum for hypomania in the diagnosis of BP-II. The healthy control (HC) group consisted of 255 volunteers recruited fromthe community via advertisement. |

| Statistical Method |
Logistic regression was then used to examine the main effects and the effects of gene-to-gene interaction of the BDNF and DRD2genes for the risk of BP-I and BP-II in all three groups. |
| Result Summary |
A significant main effect for the Val/Val genotype of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism predicted BP-II patients. The significant interaction effect for the Val/Val genotype of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and A1/A2 genotype of DRD2/ANKK1 Taq1A polymorphism was found only in BP-II patients. We provide initial evidence that the BDNF Val66Me and DRD2/ANKK1 Taq1A polymorphisms interact only in BP-II disorder and that BP-I and BP-II are genetically distinct. |
