Disease Type | Bipolar I Disorder |
Study Design | case-control |
Study Type | Candidate-gene association study |
Sample Size | 213 bipolar disorder I patients, and 197 healthy controls |
SNP/Region/Marker Size | 8 SNPs |
Predominant Ethnicity | Caucasian |
Population | Scottish |
Sample Diagnosis | DSM-IV |

Sample Status | Subjects had been receiving lithium therapy for at least 3 years. |
Technique | Genotyping was performed under contract by Kbioscience using a competitive allele specific PCR system (CASP). |
Statistical Method | For the genotype and allele-wise statistical analysis we used both X2 and Fisher's Exact Test to analyze the individual polymorphisms. GENECOUNTING software (version 1.3) was used to estimate the haplotype frequencies from the genotype data (with 1000 permutations/simulations) and Cramer's V and Absolute D' to assess linkage disequilibrium (LD) between the SNPs within each gene. To test for interaction between the two genes, we used GAIA(Genetic Association Interaction Analysis) software as well as WHAP version 2.06. |
Result Summary | Although none of the individual SNPs in these genes reached statistical significance, we found haplotype wise associations with bipolar disorder for both genes. These included a two-SNP haplotype in DAO and a two SNPhaplotype forG72(DAOA)/G30. However, we found no evidence for an epistatic interaction between the SNPs and/or haplotypes of the two genes. |
