| Sample Status |
Only participants of white European parentage were included. Participants were excluded if they, or a firstdegree relative, ever fulfilled the criteria for mania, hypomania or SZ. Moreover, the participants were also excluded, if they experienced psychotic symptoms that were mood incongruent or present when there was no evidence of a mood disturbance. |

Genotyping using the SNPlex Genotyping System (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA). |
| Statistical Method |
Computer program FINETTI was used to perform exact statistics. The UNPHASED program was applied to test for haplotypic association. The haploview 4.0 program was used to perform linkage disequilibrium analysis. The Power and Sample Size Calculations (PS) program was used to calculate the power. The problem of multiple testing was addressed by the false discovery rate (FDR) method. |
| Result Summary |
We found a significant allelic and genotypic association of the TSNAX-DISC1 gene region with BD, whereas a haplotypic association was found for both BD and MDD. |
